When it's at its best

Bare-root in winter, potted the rest of the year.

Choosing trees and shrubs

What to look for

  • Ease the plant out of its pot; the roots should fill it without circling tightly round and round.
  • Pass over anything with damaged bark, dead or twisted leaves, or signs of pests or disease.
  • A young tree should stand up with a short stake, not lean on a long cane to stay upright.
  • Check the final height and spread; a small garden tree can reach six metres in twenty years.

What to ask us

  • Will this grow well in my soil, and does it want sun or shade?
  • Does this one keep its leaves in winter, or lose them in autumn?
  • Can I slide this one out of its pot to look at the roots?
  • Will a tree this size fit through my gate and sit well clear of drains?
