Choosing healthy perennials and bedding

What to look for

  • Pick sturdy, compact plants over big ones in full flower; smaller plants often settle in better.
  • The roots should fill the pot, neither a tight mat round the edge nor barely any at all.
  • Moss, liverwort or weeds on the compost usually mean a plant has sat in its pot too long.
  • On perennials, look for fresh shoots coming up from the base, a good sign the plant will come back.
  • Leaves should be a healthy colour, without yellowing, spots or very soft, forced growth.

What to ask us

  • Is this hardy, or will a late frost kill it if it goes out too early?
  • Has this been hardened off, or does it need a couple of weeks getting used to outside?
  • Which of these come back next year, and which last just one season?
  • What will still be flowering in late summer, once the early colour is over?
