When it's at its best

A hanging basket is a small volume of compost supporting a lot of growth, in full sun, for months. It runs out of feed long before it runs out of growing season.

Choosing a hanging basket

What to look for

  • A good mix: something upright, something bushy to fill, and trailing plants to spill over the edge.
  • Check under the leaves for aphids, and look for slugs, snails or mildew before it goes home.
  • The compost should feel evenly moist; a basket that has dried right out is hard to wet again.
  • A summer basket of tender plants should not hang outside until the frosts are over.

What to ask us

  • Has this basket been hardened off, and is it safe to hang out yet?
  • How often should I feed it through the summer, and with what?
  • Which plants in a basket cope best if I miss a watering?
  • What could go in a basket for winter, once the summer one is over?
