A family nursery on the same yard since 1980

Ramswood started small. In 1980 John Allen senior began buying and selling plants from this yard on Manchester Road in Rixton, and the nursery grew from there. His son John runs it today with the rest of the Allen family. Same site, same postcode, still growing.

We are an independent, family-run garden centre and plant nursery, not like the big stores. Much of what is on the tables is grown here from young plants, trees and shrubs included, so the advice you get at the counter comes from people who grew the plant. We know what does well round here and what struggles in the local soil, and we are always glad to share it. Alongside the plants we stock compost, garden ornaments, shingles and slate, pebbles and cobbles.

Today the nursery is three parts of one business. The garden centre, open six days a week in winter and every day in summer. A planting service for homes and businesses, done with our own stock. And a trade side that supplies and plants at scale for housebuilders and commercial grounds across the North West.

The best way to know a nursery is to walk round it, and parking is free.

Grown here, from young plants

All of our bedding is grown here from the start, and much of the rest is grown on here from young plants.

Growing it ourselves means we know how each plant has been looked after, when it is ready, and what it needs once it goes in your garden. It also means the stock changes with the season, so what you find on the tables in March is not what you will find in September.
